A neon sign is a type of advertising that uses electricity to excite the gases in a glass tube to produce a glowing light. Neon signs are popular because they are inexpensive, they are a relatively low-maintenance option, and they are attractive. The word "neon" is derived from the Greek word "neos" meaning "new." The word "neon" was first used by British chemist Sir William Ramsay in 1898. The invention of the neon sign is attributed to American inventor Claude Neon. Neon signs are made up of three main parts: a glass tube, a small amount of mercury, and an electrical source. The gas inside the tube is usually one of the noble gases: argon, neon, or helium. The gas is electrically excited to produce a red, orange, or yellow light. The mercury acts as a conductor, causing the electricity to excite the gas. A neon sign is typically illuminated by a large high-voltage transformer. This transformer supplies power to the tube by producing a high-voltage electric current that travels through the tube and into the mercury.
